I am always on the lookout for new and exciting updates for our home that make it more unique, more us, and more expensive looking for cheap. My most recent DIY update was to change our floor registers. If you have a somewhat newer home you have the same metal floor register in an ugly military bronze color.
I have looked on Pinterest to get ideas for replacement floor registers. They make wood, steel, and cast iron in a variety of colors and designs. While shopping at Home Depot the other night for my son’s Halloween costume I looked at the floor registers. They are priced anywhere from $9-30 per register. On our first floor we have 9 registers in hardwood floor. So, doing some quick math, that would cost us between $80-300 for new floor registers and I just couldn’t justify that cost, so I came up with an alternative.
I decided to purchase a can of espresso Rust-Oleum spray paint in satin finish from JoAnn Fabrics for $7.99 and painted the floor registers to blend into the flooring. I started with the registers on our first floor where we have dark oak hardwood floors. Here are the before and after pictures.
So, for $8 we now have more aesthetically pleasing floor registers and a total savings of as much as $292!
