As the beginning of the school year starts, I get antsy for fall. I love the changing of the leaves, the warm colors, the way the sun shines more golden, and that crisp, snap in the air. It may be that I love fall or maybe I’m just so tired of the heat, but by the time fall comes, I am more than ready to break out the sweaters, apple cider, and fall decor.
10 Ways to Add Fall Decor to Your Home
- Hang a fall wreath on your front door.
- Add potted mums to your front porch.
- Update your doormat by adding layers- a plaid rug under a coir doormat.
- Add a fall touch to a living room or family room with throws and throw pillows.
- Arrange a centerpiece for your table and coffee tables.
- Light fall scented candles.
- Fill hurricane vases with pine cones or acorns as the base of a pillar candle.
- Choose pumpkins that will coordinate with the feel and decor you are interested in (white- neutral vs orange- colorful).
- Hang fall dishtowels on your oven door.
- Add a fall runner to your kitchen table.
Outdoor Decor
This year in particular I was ready for a fresh new look for fall. So I started with the front of the house, the first thing that welcomes you when you pull up to our house.
I updated our entrance with a new coir monogramed doormat on top of a black and white buffalo plaid rug. I hung my signature fall berry wreath and added light yellow mums flanking the steps to accent our cranberry colored front door.
As always, I’m looking for a deal when I decorate, so I purchased the doormat from Bed, Bath, and Beyond on sale for $20, the rug from Amazon for $26, and got the wreath on clearance from Pier 1 at the end of the season last year. A little tip for purchasing flowering mums: firstly, you can almost buy them anywhere, but you will pay more for convenience; secondly, I purchased mine at Home Depot for half price ($6) because they were considered “past peak bloom.” I figured with the heat, they may not last long anyways, but who wants a bunch of mum buds in front of their house anyway? I want to see the flowers! And this way if they don’t last long enough, I’ll just purchase beyond peak again and end up with fully blooming flowers for the same price.
I am not much for a lot of tchotchke decorations and we have a small front stoop, so there really isn’t room for much else. I generally don’t decorate the outside of the house for Halloween or Thanksgiving, so this will be it until we change it for Christmas.
Indoor Decor
I love almost all fall decor, but finding a place for it in our home is more of the issue. I am very choosy about what we purchase, so our fall decor is somewhat limited indoors.
This year, I decorated the mantel in neutral shades featuring gourds, candles, dusty looking leaves, and fall foliage, I added a few pumpkins this year in cream, gold, and brown.
There are a number of ways to make your home smell like fall from candles, wax melts, essential oils, to room scents. In an effort to be more healthy and natural, try to opt for candles that are soy or that burn more cleanly, consider wax melts, or opt for essential oil blends over room scents. I personally love the fall scented candles from Bath & Body Works like Kitchen Spice and Cinnamon Spiced Vanilla, so I pull those out this time of the year as well.
For the first time ever, I decided to purchase pillow covers and exchange my usual style and adapt for more fall look. This way I get the best of both worlds without breaking the bank and having to store pillows.
I finally found a centerpiece that I love from Marshalls. I opted for LED candles to keep things childproof. I was also able to find a coordinating kitchen table runner in black and white buffalo plaid from Pier 1 and a wreath hanger from JoAnn Fabrics.
I love having fresh flowers in the house, and if I could afford it I would have them in most rooms year round. I found this fall bouquet at Costco for $13.99 that I couldn’t pass up.
I like to look for deals on seasonal items from stores like Marshalls, Homegoods, TJMaxx, Hallmark, Pier 1 and At Home. Additionally, you can always keep an eye out at online stores like Amazon, Wayfair, and Hayneedle.
For under $100 I was able to find everything below (centerpiece, tablecloth, set of 14 napkins, bar napkins, 2 serving platters, and a serving dish) for a harvest table.
